“Spray It Pretty” with HomeRight

I have been supplied with a HomeRight  HVLP sprayer.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Happy New Year everyone! And there’s no better way of starting the New Year off right but to begin with another furniture makeover for the Fab Flippin Furniture Contest!!

This month’s sponsor is HomeRight.  HomeRight has a full line of Do It Yourself products that don’t just include paint sprayers and the like. They also sell steamers, heat guns, automotive items and more. For this month’s contest , the theme for the furniture makeover was “Spray it Pretty””so they supplied each participant with their own HVLP (High Velocity Low Pressure) Fine Finish Max Sprayer to use for this contest.

For this contest I  was feeling ambitious and I knew spraying would cut my time in half, so I decided to spray a mid century modern  vintage Bassett dresser AND  matching desk that I had just bought.! I knew this set would be perfect to use this sprayer on!  I wanted an elegant, and regal look for these pieces, so I decided to use a Benjamin Moore color called Ivory Tusk.  I had it made up in Pro Classic by Sherwin Williams in a Satin finish.

What’s great about this  HomeRight HVLP sprayer is that there’s no need for an air compressor. You just plug it in to an outlet! The operation is very easy…unscrew the plastic jar,  and fill with paint that is thinned down. You can really choose any paint you desire. Chalk paint, milk paint, even oil based paint works in this sprayer.  They supply you with a viscosity cup, so you can test the thickness of the paint before you start painting.  I usually set my timer on my phone as I pour my paint through.  If it takes longer than the recommended time to go all the way through the cup, then I thin my paint a bit more.

Here is the dresser that I painted. It was in dirty and dusty when I got this, but the drawers ran smoothly and there were no repairs I had to make. In terms of prep, all I did was give everything a good sanding down  with my palm sander and clean inside and out very well.  I set up the operation in my garage, laid out plenty of tarps and drop cloths and covered anything else that I didn’t want to get paint on.  Another great feature of this sprayer is that there is minimal overspray. You can also change the direction of how you want the spray to come out of the nozzle.  It can be vertical cone, or horizontal depending on the piece of furniture you’re painting.  That helps a lot when you are working on different sizes and shapes of furniture.

Here is before of the desk. Just look at that original faux bamboo hardware!!  I took all the drawers out of the piece and took off all the hardware before spraying.  I sprayed the handles a bright gold to offset the ivory color of the furniture.

Here is the after! Look at that finish!! You could never achieve that lustrous, and brush mark free finish with any paint brush!  Clean up was a breeze.  I took off all the apparatus including the nozzle and the pieces inside it, and cleaned them out in soapy water.  Cleaning everything right away is really key, leaving it too long without cleaning gunks up the nozzle and the other hardware in the gun. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to clean and its well worth the minimal effort.

I must say, this sprayer is really goof proof. You can’t mess this up! I recommend doing a little bit of practice spraying on a board or two beforehand,  but once you get going there’s no turning back! Short, even strokes work best, and building up light layers work beautifully.

You don’t want to linger too long on one area, or the paint will start to pool, so you have to keep your HomeRight sprayer at a good distance and keep the sprayer moving at all times. The gun has a trigger, which when you release the paint stops flowing.

A little close up of the hardware and the smooth, perfect finish that the HomeRight Fine Finish Max Sprayer gave me. You have a lot of control with the sprayer. I didn’t even tape off the inside of the drawers. No overspray got inside, at all.

I’m thrilled with the outcome, and I can’t wait till my next project using the HomeRight HVLP Fine Finish Max Sprayer. A huge thank you to the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest for letting me participate this month’s contest!
